Junior Mortgages Underwriter

8:30am to 4:15pm - Monday to Friday

An opportunity to work for a fast-growing Bank based in the City of London near Bank. Working alongside our Senior Mortgage Underwriter you will be supporting all forms of underwriting across residential mortgages reviewing and underwriting residential mortgages, further advances, and loan modifications in line with the Bank’s lending criteria procedures. You will have control over ensuring the principles of conduct risk, TCF, and responsible lending are observed and that detailed affordability assessments are completed. In addition, you will be expected to manage underwriting queries from selected introducers efficiently and effectively.

If you are not yet CeMAP qualified – we will help you to complete professional qualification (CeMAP) within a 12 month period of joining and also work on a personal development plan  that supports you to gain an in depth understanding of Mortgages and the underwriting process sat within this.

Role Profile

  • Operate within our personal lending mandate, referring cases outside of that mandate to more senior colleagues or committees as per Bank policy.
  • Ensure that all correspondence, including KYC identification, income documents, references, and valuations, are in line with lending policy and provide sufficient evidence to satisfy KYC and AML requirements.
  • Ensure that all applications are complete and a robust rationale for the lending decision is documented.
  • Manage own caseload, handle underwriting queries, and resolve issues on individual cases.
  • Liaise with customers, intermediaries, and related 3rd parties (including valuers and conveyancers) to gather information to make appropriate decisions and explain rationale behind lending decisions.
  • Act fairly, reasonably and with integrity in all dealings with customers, intermediaries, valuers, and solicitors, ensuring TCF and responsible lending principles are observed.
  • Manage the production of facility documentation, security oversight, drawdown and fee taking arrangements.
  • Carry out customer reviews / re-mortgages in a timely manner to ensure managed service and diligence levels are upheld.
  • To complete professional qualification (CeMAP) within 12-month period of joining and also work on personal development plan with senior mortgage underwriter and Head of Mortgages to gain a in depth understanding of Mortgages and the underwriting process sat within this.

Other Duties

  • Fully embrace the Bank’s culture and values.
  • Identify potential improvements to underwriting systems, policies, criteria, and processes.
  • Undertake ad hoc work as directed by line manager from time to time.
  • Satisfactory file review/call listening results from oversight of underwriting activity ensuring compliance with regulation, responsible lending policy, mandates and TCF principles.
  • Remain up to date with knowledge by reading professional publications, participating in professional organisations, and maintaining personal networks.
  • Work effectively with colleagues from within the underwriting, risk, mortgages, and other associated teams.
